Kagoshima｜Take a Ferry to See Sakurajima Volcano and the Mini Pink Torii of Itsukushima Shrine

When visiting Kagoshima, taking a ferry to Sakurajima is a must. In just a 15-minute ride, you can reach this 77-square-kilometer active volcano. Sakurajima is a composite volcano made up of three peaks: Kitadake, Nakadake, and Minamidake. Historically, this island was strategically significant for monitoring all directions and was called Mukojima. It wasn't until the Satsuma Domain period that it was officially named Sakurajima. Originally, over 20,000 people lived on the island, but after the major eruption during the Taisho era, the population significantly decreased. Combined with the persistent volcanic ash, many residents relocated, leaving only about 4,000 people today. Next to the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, you'll find a striking mini pink torii gate belonging to Itsukushima Shrine, dedicated to the deity of fishing. In ancient times, fishermen would come here to pray for safe voyages. It is said to have been here since the Taisho era, and today, the mini shrine and torii still stand by the port, protecting the ships that come and go. Near the terminal, there's a park with a footbath. While soaking your feet, you might encounter stray cats seeking attention, making for a relaxing moment under the sun. You can also take a sightseeing bus to the Lava Observatory to explore the natural wonders formed by the volcano.
