We wandered down Sakaimachi Hondori Street in Otaru and it felt like stepping into a living postcard. The street begins under a charming, old-fashioned oil lamp that casts a warm glow—one of those moments that makes you stop, look up, and think, “Yeah, this is Japan, just as you imagine.” A highlight is the famed Otaru steam clock, perched about midway along the street. We caught it as it let off its signature steam puffs and melodic chimes, pausing nearby to watch both kids and adults light up in delight. It’s endearingly whimsical—and surprisingly loud!
