🇰🇭 Hello, Phnom Penh! First Impressions of Cambodia ✈️
I've just arrived in Phnom Penh, and it feels like a completely different world compared to Phu Quoc. There are no beaches or ocean breeze here, but instead, there’s chaos, energy, and a unique big-city vibe.
🔥 First Impressions:
1. Traffic is wild! Scooters, tuk-tuks, and cars move in all directions, yet somehow, no one crashes.
2. Contrasts everywhere. Luxury hotels and skyscrapers stand right next to street markets and simple wooden houses.
3. Two official currencies. Cambodia uses both US dollars and Cambodian riels. You can pay with either, and ATMs allow withdrawals in both currencies.
4. The atmosphere. This city truly feels like the heart of Southeast Asia—bustling streets, street food aromas, and ancient temples hidden within the urban chaos.
🍜 What I’ve Tried So Far:
- Amok – Cambodia’s signature dish, a delicious fish curry with coconut milk.
- Lok Lak – Marinated beef with rice and a fried egg, a true Cambodian classic.
- Strong Cambodian coffee – Even stronger than Vietnamese coffee, but still served with condensed milk.
🏛 What’s Next?
🔹 Exploring the Royal Palace and Phnom Penh’s temples.
🔹 Figuring out how the city works and where digital nomads can live comfortably.
🔹 Diving into the local culture, tasting more traditional dishes, and discovering how Cambodia differs from Vietnam.
So far, the city feels chaotic yet exciting in its own way. Cambodia is definitely going to be an adventure!

1️⃣ 🏛️ Royal Palace Plaza – A Khmer Fairytale

Stepping into the Royal Palace feels like entering a living fairytale — golden spires, sacred halls, and intricate Khmer architecture that glows under the tropical sun. ✨
Whether you’re a history buff or just chasing the perfect photo, this is a must-see in Phnom Penh. Don’t miss the Silver Pagoda inside the complex — its floor is literally made of real silver. 🤯
⏰ Best time to visit: Morning before it gets hot
🎟️ Entry: Around $10 USD
📸 Tip: Wear modest clothes (shoulders & knees covered)
Cambodia's royalty may not reside here daily anymore, but the elegance of this palace still reigns supreme.

The Royal Jewel of Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Grand Palace
#summervacay #phnom_penh #thingstodo #myitinerary #travel #royalpalacephnompenh
The Royal Palace, built in 1866, is more than a royal residence—it’s a sprawling complex that embodies the monarchy’s spiritual and political power. Its most iconic structure, the Throne Hall (Preah Tineang Tevea Vinichhay), is where coronations, royal ceremonies, and formal audiences are held. Adorned with traditional Khmer architecture and gilded in gold, it showcases celestial motifs that reflect divine kingship.
Nearby is the Moonlight Pavilion (Preah Thineang Chan Chhaya), a beautiful open-air hall used for dance performances and public audiences. It represents transparency and connection between the monarchy and the people. The Napoleon Pavilion, a curious blend of European influence, once housed royal receptions and now serves as a museum-like relic of colonial-era diplomacy.

⸻
3. Travel – discovery style:
“Coming to Phnom Penh is not only to see the magnificent palace or sit on the cool banks of the Tonle Sap River, but also to listen to history told through silence and traces of time.”
⸻
4. Personal – contemplative style:
“I came to Phnom Penh not looking for anything specific, but brought back more than expected: a strange, sad, beautiful feeling – very Cambodian.”

Day in Phnom penh
Explore the city by Tuk Tuk easily. Take a walk down the river, lost of locals like to relax here and plenty of stalls selling street food. On the weekend they close the street so that markets can be held and people can freely walk around on the roads without the busy traffic. You can take a drink in the evening in the busy nightlife or can take a scenic walk to view to royal palace. There are also cheap boat trips on the water.
