First you have to catch a small bus to Choglamsar and from there a shared taxi to Thiksey monastery. It is a bit confusing but locals are helpful and will point put where to get in and out. The monastery is huge and it took me over 3 hours of slowly walking and exploring. It has lots of passages and rooftop access at different levels. Photography inside monastery rooms isn't allowed but tourists still can go inside and see the interiors. Additional bonus were blooming apricot trees 😍 That happened in mid April.

I went on a rental scooter and the trip was wonderful! The road is good, the views of surrounding mountains are stunning and the monastery itself is serene and tranquil. The monastery wasn't crowded and lots of monks were everywhere. I walked through different rooms and passages, enjoyed the view from rooftops and then just sat on one of the benches at the yard and enjoyed details of the temple buildings and listened to chanting. Overall, highly recommend this place. Tip: beware that you must take off your shoes to go inside. Tip 2: they ask not to take photos inside the monastery, please, be respectful.

I came to Helus Monastery in Ladakh, India. It's about 1.5 hours by rental motorbike from the city of Leh. The 17th century monastery is quietly located in a remote valley. At first, they asked for 800 rupees per person, but last year they said they stayed at 400, so we negotiated for 400 for just sleeping, excluding food.
