Sarmiento Lake, Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Lake Sarmiento is 23 kilometers long, 6 kilometers wide, and has a maximum depth of 315 meters. It was named after the Spanish explorer Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa. I drove here from Punta Arenas. The landmark of Torres del Paine and the surrounding peaks, along with the 90 square kilometers of Lake Sarmiento, were first remembered by my brain. Lake Sarmiento became the first postcard treasured in my mind among the many beautiful views of Torres del Paine National Park. It is the largest lake in the national park and unlike other glacial lakes in the park, its origin is rain-fed, giving it a deep blue color. Here, the wind never seems to tire, blurring the reflections of the Torres del Paine massif and the snow-capped Mount Admiral Nieto in the lake’s surface.
