Peter Afternoon Tea at The Peninsula Tokyo

The last afternoon tea of 2024 was enjoyed at Peter Bar in The Peninsula Tokyo. Two years ago, around this time, I visited The Lobby on the 1st floor, one of Tokyo's top four afternoon tea spots. Out of the 300 afternoon teas I've experienced, this place ranks in the top five. As I passed through the lobby lounge, I noticed the tables were still fully occupied. Heading past the reception area, I took the elevator, which only had buttons up to the 23rd floor. True to the hotel's reputation for excellent service, a bellboy and bellgirl were nearby to escort guests. I asked them about Peter, and they informed me that there’s a separate black-door elevator in the corner arcade leading directly to Peter. Although they offered to guide me, I assured them I could find it on my own and proceeded upstairs. Peter is divided into two spaces: the main area is a grill and steak restaurant, while the entrance area houses an independent bar. The restaurant offers views of Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace, while the bar faces the massive Tokyo Midtown Hibiya building. I visited at 4 PM, as my return flight was scheduled for 8 PM. My seat was assigned by the window, offering a stunning city view despite the Midtown building. The scenery included passing Shinkansen and Yamanote Line trains, as well as a glimpse of Odaiba. The menu consisted of four savory items and four sweets, forming a compact yet refined repertoire. Like a compact powder that completes a look, this afternoon tea was similarly perfect. Though the selection was limited, each item was carefully curated and luxurious. The sweets included the hotel bakery’s signature mango pudding, while the savory items featured generous portions of truffle and foie gras. The plan also included a glass of Peninsula-selected champagne, making it an excellent choice. The free-flow drink option was served by the glass, allowing guests to enjoy a variety of beverages. Around 4:30 PM, as the sun set, the night view unfolded, blending beautifully with the restaurant’s lighting to create a magical atmosphere. Even the restroom here is remarkable. It features a window, allowing you to wash your hands or attend to your needs while facing Tokyo Tower. Although such scenic restrooms are not uncommon, this was my first time experiencing one with a Tokyo Tower view. Truly impressive. ※. Exiting through the hotel’s rear entrance leads directly to the illuminated Marunouchi Street.
