Shenyang: Echoes of Empire in a Modern Metropolis

Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, is a vibrant city where imperial history and modern life meet in fascinating ways. As the former capital of the Qing Dynasty, Shenyang offers both grand heritage and the bold energy of the northeast. My day began at the Mukden Palace (Shenyang Imperial Palace), a smaller but equally magnificent cousin of Beijing’s Forbidden City. Walking through its red walls, dragon-carved gates, and ancient halls, I imagined the early Qing emperors ruling from this very spot. The palace’s mix of Manchu and Han styles made it both unique and beautiful. Next, I visited the Zhao Mausoleum (Beiling Park), the resting place of Emperor Huang Taiji. The peaceful pine forest, stone archways, and ancient spirit way made it feel like a sacred journey through time. For lunch, I stopped at a local restaurant to try Shenyang’s famous “laobian jiaozi” (Lao Bian Dumplings)—juicy, flavorful, and served with the warmth typical of the northeast. In the afternoon, I explored Taiyuan Street, one of the city’s busiest shopping areas, full of life, local snacks, and fashionable stores. The modern skyline sparkled around me, showing how far Shenyang has come. Shenyang is a city of contrasts—imperial and industrial, traditional and modern—but above all, it’s full of strength, character, and unforgettable stories.
