Shanghai's Magnificent Temple: Jing'an Temple

Jing'an Temple, located in the heart of Shanghai's Jing'an District, is a stunning temple you can visit while shopping in the area. This temple boasts a history of nearly 1,800 years and is one of the most important Shingon Buddhism sites in China. Originally built during the Three Kingdoms period, Jing'an Temple is steeped in history. The temple grounds are covered in gold, presenting a luxurious appearance that is quite different from Japanese temples. Depending on the time of your visit, you may even hear monks chanting sutras. Entry to the temple requires a ticket, priced at 50 RMB per person (as of June 2025). Payment can be made by scanning the QR code at the entrance and completing the transaction online. If you are unable to access the internet, you can ask the staff for assistance, and they will accept cash payments.
