The Hakodate Orthodox Church took me by surprise. Nestled in the Motomachi district, it feels almost out of place at first—this domed, whitewashed church with its green roof and onion-shaped domes rising against a backdrop of Japanese hillside homes. But that contrast is exactly what makes it so memorable. It’s peaceful, elegant, and quietly proud of its history. As I walked up the path toward the church, the soft chime of bells echoed through the trees. There was a stillness in the air that made me slow my steps. The church isn’t massive, but it holds its presence with grace. It’s been rebuilt after fires and earthquakes, yet still stands with the same spirit that once welcomed Russian missionaries over a century ago. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go inside during my visit—it was closed that afternoon—but even just standing outside, I felt the weight of history. The view from the church grounds is beautiful too; it looks out toward the Hakodate harbor, adding another layer of calm and perspective.
