🌸 Walking Through History: A Peaceful Stroll at Goryōkaku Park

Goryōkaku Park was one of those places that surprised me with its beauty and calm. I had seen photos of the star-shaped fort before arriving, but walking through it in person—especially in the early morning—was something else. There’s a peacefulness in the way the paths wind around the moats, with tall trees lining both sides. It felt more like a quiet forest walk than a historical site at times. I visited during summer, so the cherry blossoms were long gone, but the greenery was lush and the wide-open spaces made it feel airy and relaxing. I took my time walking the perimeter, occasionally stopping at benches just to soak in the view. The water in the moat was so still it looked like glass, reflecting the trees and sky perfectly. Climbing up the Goryōkaku Tower was worth it. That’s when the full star shape really comes to life—it’s hard to appreciate the design from the ground. From above, the symmetry is incredible, and you really get a sense of how well-planned the fort was. I also enjoyed the museum inside the tower, which gave just enough context about the history without being overwhelming. What I liked most was how it didn’t feel overly touristy. Locals were out for walks, families were having picnics, and there were high school students in uniform chatting by the moat. It felt lived-in and loved by the community.
