My Trip to 233: Colonia, Uruguay

Uruguay 🇺🇾 Colonia del Sacramento Colonia del Sacramento, also known as the Historic Quarter of Colonia, is a city in the Colonia Department of Uruguay. The historic quarter of Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples. Later, due to the Portuguese and Spanish vying for and colonizing Colonia, the fusion of these two cultures is evident everywhere. Despite the vicissitudes of history, the architecture and urban spaces of Colonia's old town still retain their original appearance and layout; the street layout is typically Portuguese, narrow and irregular. Walking along the Portuguese cobblestone streets, one sees lush trees and blooming flowers. We took a 3-hour (180 km) bus ride from Montevideo for a day trip to Colonia. Many people take a 1-hour ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a day trip to Colonia.
