Explore the ambiguity between calligraphy and abstract painting through the spirit of ‘Zhang Zheng’s brushwork. The Calligraphic Abstraction exhibition presents an artistic approach that transcends the division between letters and images by the deeply spiritual artist ‘Zhang Zheng’, a Thai-Chinese artist who closely integrates knowledge of Chinese philosophy, Buddhism, and Oriental painting into his works. Zhang’s works are a dialogue between linguistics and symbols, not just about meaning, but also about access to the essence. The exhibition is divided into two main sections: ▪️Lower floor of the hall: Displaying works from 1971-1972, a period when the artist developed his artistic language by leaps and bounds. The works are arranged on both sides of the table in the middle of the room. The first group shows single characters similar to Chinese characters, conveying the form in language. The second group will be poetic paintings, distilled from the artistic grammar of Chinese characters, reflecting the ambiguity of meaning. ▪️Second floor: We will find Zhang’s largest painting, which is considered his masterpiece. This piece reveals the inner power that is still but firm. Translating the idea of ​​being one with nature through the Taoist way and Buddhist meditation, this piece is currently in the process of being restored in collaboration with Restaurateurs Sans Frontières, demonstrating the process of preserving art in a living way. This exhibition asks us to question what we see: does something that “seems to be language” need to be translated?
