Corfu's Last Octagonal Byzantine Fortress

The Byzantine Fortress of Gardiki is a significant historical structure in the southern part of Corfu. This fortress is the only remaining Byzantine castle on the island that follows an octagonal design, making it unique among Corfu's historical defenses. Its construction dates back to the 13th century, built by Michael I Komnenos Doukas, the ruler of the Despotate of Epirus. The fortress's walls are notable for their sturdy construction, featuring eight towers, one at each corner of the octagonal shape. While much of the original structure is now in ruins, the impressive walls and remnants of the towers still provide a clear outline of its former grandeur.
