Day 1: Arrive in Xinjiang, experience exotic charm
- Morning: Fly from Beijing to Urumqi. Upon landing, you can immediately feel Xinjiang’s dryness and vastness, completely different from Beijing’s mild climate.
- Afternoon: Head straight to the International Grand Bazaar, full of rich Western region style. The architecture is distinctive, blending Islamic, Central Plains, and Uyghur styles. Walking through it feels like traveling back to an ancient Central Asian market. The dazzling array of goods includes exquisite Hetian jade, colorful Adras silk, and sweet dried fruits. Along the way, taste local delicacies: crispy baked buns with juicy meat filling; oily and fragrant hand-pulled rice, each bite rich with lamb flavor.
- Evening: Take the overnight train to Yining, looking forward to the upcoming Ili adventure amid the clatter of the train.
Day 2: Encounter the grandeur of Kalajun Grassland
- Morning: Depart from Yining to Kalajun Grassland. Upon arrival, you’ll be stunned by the vast grassland meeting the blue sky, with wildflowers blooming everywhere.
- Afternoon: Originally planned to visit Xianhuatai and other spots, but due to road closures, only half the area was explored. Even so, the scenery was intoxicating, with snow-capped mountains sparkling under the sun and soft, vibrant grass beneath your feet. Overnight in Tekesi, a mysterious Bagua City.
Day 3: Explore Qiongkushitai Village, experience simple folk customs
- Morning: Head to Qiongkushitai Village, with picturesque scenery along the way—rolling hills and shady trees. Upon arrival, visit a herder’s home, swing, and ride horses together, feeling pure joy. The herder’s child doesn’t speak Chinese, only calls “mama.” Playing with him, teaching him Chinese, and sharing snacks makes you wonder about his daily life.
- Afternoon: Return to Tekesi to visit Bagua City and the museum. The city’s layout follows the Bagua pattern, very unique, with no traffic lights but orderly traffic. The museum displays many historical artifacts, deepening understanding of the land’s past.
Day 4: Fall in love with Nalati, embrace the beauty of the grassland
- Morning: Head to Nalati. Upon entering the scenic area, you’ll be attracted by endless green grasslands and herds of cattle and sheep.
- Afternoon: Check in at the popular bridge, play Guandan on the grassland, and enjoy a leisurely time. Everything here is just right—the great weather, beautiful scenery, and like-minded friends make it unforgettable. Overnight in Nalati, falling asleep under the grassland night sky.
Day 5: The comfort of Panlong Ancient Road and the awe of Sailimu Lake
- Morning: Continue playing Guandan in Nalati, enjoying a relaxed time, then head to Panlong Ancient Road. Driving along the winding road, the scenery changes constantly, like being inside a landscape painting.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Sailimu Lake. The moment you see the deep blue water, you’re instantly captivated by its beauty. The lake’s color under the sun is a unique blue that neither the sea nor the sky can match—a blue that cleanses the soul. Overnight near Sailimu Lake, anticipating the sunrise the next day.
Day 6: Chase the sunrise at Sailimu Lake, feel Urumqi’s artistic vibe
- Early morning: To catch the sunrise, woke up at 5:50 AM but got lost due to wrong navigation. After a frantic drive, luckily arrived just minutes before sunrise. Standing at Kele Yongzhu, watching the sun slowly rise, golden sunlight shimmering on the lake, all fatigue vanished at that moment.
- Morning: Continue exploring Sailimu Lake, visiting Dianjiangtai Lighthouse and Squirrel Head, each spot enchanting.
- Afternoon: Drive back to Urumqi. In the evening, visit Sanqiu Tavern. The band’s performance is very relaxed; listening to the saxophone, life’s endless possibilities seem to open up. Driving six or seven hours back just to see this show was totally worth it.
Day 7: Return home with beautiful memories
- Morning: Rest briefly in Urumqi, prepare for the return trip. This Ili self-driving trip left many wonderful memories.
- Afternoon: Fly back to Beijing, ending this unforgettable journey.

Travel Review
Car rental advice: Strongly recommend renting a car in Yining. Driving from Urumqi to Yining takes six to seven hours and is quite exhausting. Taking the overnight train from Urumqi to Yining is a good option, allowing rest and enjoying the scenery along the way.
Weather factors: Ili’s weather changes quickly. When the weather is good, the scenery is stunning; when bad, it feels apocalyptic. For example, it rained and was cold on the first day at Kalajun, so not much beauty was seen. After the afternoon cleared, the scenery was completely different. It’s recommended to stay in the city when it rains and go to the grassland when the weather is good. The itinerary should be flexible based on weather. Originally planned to visit Sailimu Lake first then the grassland, but due to bad weather, moved Sailimu Lake to the last day, which proved wise.
Planning tips: Xinjiang is vast with many attractions. It’s best to plan ahead, list your must-visit spots, and be flexible with others. After all, the most beautiful scenery is often on the road.
