When the weather is good, the scenery is stunning; when bad, it feels apocalyptic. For example, it rained and was cold on the first day at Kalajun, so not much beauty was seen. Deep within Bostan Street, I stumbled upon a charming little shop brimming with Xinjiang ethnic flair—Muma's Ice Cream. Unlike typical dessert shops, stepping inside reveals a high arched blue dome, colorful lighting, Uyghur-patterned tablecloths, and carved railings. The walls are adorned with handcrafted hats, woven fabrics, copper pots, and ethnic musical instruments, exuding a strong Central Asian vibe. Every detail feels like walking into a Uyghur home. I ordered the original flavor ice cream, which was rich in milk aroma and had a creamy texture. The shop also offers taro, vanilla, mango, and other flavors, all naturally fragrant and not overly sweet. This is not just ordinary ice cream; it's a fusion of Xinjiang's land and craftsmanship. If you visit Tekes, this scoop is definitely worth the trip. “Kalajun” means “black prairie” in Kazakh. Known as the “King of the Grasslands” for its vast and layered scenery, it perfectly embodies the beauty of Yili. It was also one of my husband's biggest expectations for this trip. Unfortunately, the weather was uncooperative; the two days we planned to visit Kalajun were either cloudy ☁️ or rainy 🌧️. So on the first day, when it was cloudy, we made sure to “get up early” (actually around 10 a.m. haha 🤣) and drove from Tekesi... Even though it wasn’t peak season and the weather was not ideal, the number of people and cars was still considerable. Therefore, we kept moving and only visited the two main destinations for the day: Xianhuatai and Lieyingtai. There is a shuttle bus between the two, or you can choose to hike about 5 kilometers. Since private cars can only drive to the shuttle bus departure point, we took the sightseeing bus to Xianhuatai first. We arrived at Xianhuatai around 1 p.m. and then walked along the boardwalk. Friendly reminder 🔔: if you’re not confident in your hiking ability, it’s recommended to ride a horse for this section. Compared to the horse riding spots at other scenic areas we saw later, Kalajun’s horse teams are more professional. Almost all the horses are ridden by young men from Xinjiang sitting on cushions behind the saddle, while tourists can comfortably sit in front and leave the reins to them. Also, probably because it’s flat here, the grassland terrain feels gentler. Near Xianhuatai, there are two popular swing spots. One is right next to the boardwalk and often has a queue, while the other is less crowded and the horse teams often take visitors directly there. I walked from the first to the second swing, and then I was completely exhausted. After resting for half an hour, with the wind picking up and dark clouds covering the distant peaks almost completely, we had to give up on Lieyingtai. We hurried straight down the mountain. Tekes Bagua City·Tekes Stayed at an amazing homestay in Yili this June—highly recommend it! Here’s my experience for reference. ⛲️ Purple House Courtyard Homestay This is a super high-quality homestay, one of the best in Tekes. It feels like staying in a wealthy family’s villa, with unique decor. The courtyard has a tea room with floor-to-ceiling windows, displaying various tea sets and artworks. There’s also a huge koi pond with uniquely shaped pine trees in the middle. Sitting by the pond sipping tea is incredibly peaceful and relaxing. We arrived late at night, but the staff greeted us at the gate, helped with luggage, and showed us to our room. To avoid a long check-in wait, the butler took us straight to the room and later brought our IDs to us. Entering the room, we found fresh apricots and pastries on the table—such a warm touch, especially since we were hungry after the late arrival. The next day, we lounged in the courtyard, drinking tea and taking photos—so comfortable! Just as we sat down, the butler brought over tea and a fruit platter with local dried nuts, fresh melon, and delicious unfamiliar snacks. Unbelievably thoughtful! They also provide three free meals daily (lunch at 1 PM). The butler even arranged a late checkout so we could enjoy lunch before leaving. So touching! 🥲 If you’re unsure where to stay in Tekes, I strongly recommend Purple House Homestay—great environment, excellent service, and fantastic value for money (it had just opened when we stayed, so prices were reasonable). The only thing: it’s tucked away in an alley. About 200 meters in, you might think you’re lost, but once you arrive—wow, it’s a hidden gem! The initial confusion just adds to the surprise.

For budget-conscious travelers, stay in the core area of the ancient village with shuttle service... Convenient access to the ancient trail and back mountain, though with slightly less scenic rooms. Recommended ♥ Qiongkushitai Yifenge Homestay - fully equipped new property with excellent service, rare sunset views from rooms! For those wanting picture-perfect grassland views right outside their window, stay outside the village. Recommended newly opened Xiangwan Mugui Homestay - uniquely designed with spacious rooms and breathtaking views, featuring private viewing balconies at both front and rear. The sunset views are absolutely stunning! Hidden deep in the grasslands, Hobbit-style Chunshan Songyue Homestay offers tranquility with windows directly facing the awe-inspiring back mountain scenery at great value! The thoughtful Hobbit house design is unique, the owner is extremely hospitable, and the food is exceptionally delicious! Highly recommend their hot pot 🍲 and big plate chicken.
