Go for a flavour of local life
For the most part, the bars and restaurants around the square can easily be missed (notable exemption for the Hannen-Alt, which is always popular with locals) - but you should go for a taste of local life in the evening. Families, couples, young people...everyone comes here for a walk and a chat. Enjoy the fountain, palm trees and ambience. La Marea is good for a drink nearby, and check out the bargains at Benetton.

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife’s first holiday resort!
Puerto de la Cruz is the original holiday resort on the island of Tenerife. For that reason, this city really has something that caters to everyone and to all budgets. From the colonial architecture in the Old Town, to the sprawling and expansive coast line, there is something for everyone here. And a stones throw away from Puerto de la Cruz are also some stunning destinations that are waiting to be uncovered. So come with me as I show you the best places to visit whilst touring around this picture perfect town, and let me highlight some of the best tourist attractions that you must include in your itinerary whilst staying in this part of Tenerife.
One of your first stops in the city has to be to the Centro Histórico de Puerto de La Cruz or the Old Town. It’s a fantastic place to wander around and admire the colourful colonial architecture and wall art on display. Intertwined with boutique shops and eateries, this has the ultimate laid back vibe.
A good vantage point of the city can be had at La Batería de Santa Barbara. Built in the 18th century to protect against pirate attacks, this area is now a fascinating historical monument complete with ancient cannons on display.
Further along the waterfront is Costa Martianez. This leisure complex consists of seven seawater pools surrounded by sunbathing areas as well as bars and restaurants. There’s a fee to enter, but it’s a great place to unwind, especially if the surrounding sea waters are a bit choppy on the day you’re visiting.
Further along the coast, you’ll find Playa de la Barranquera. A small, black sand beach which is a popular spot for surfers.
Starting to head out of town, you’ll find the Agatha Christie Painted steps. Agatha Christie spent some time in Puerto de La Cruz in 1927, and to honour this, the town has painted these 47 steps with titles of Christie’s books emblazoned on them.
After a short hike, and just minutes away from the Agatha Christie steps is Mirador de la Paz - a viewpoint with vistas stretching across the whole city and the ocean below. It’s a great place to soak in the vibes of Puerto de la Cruz and to really see why this is such a popular tourist destination.

Tenerife’s Black Sand Beaches: Nature’s Volcanic Masterpieces
#postandearn
Tenerife’s black sand beaches are a striking testament to the island’s volcanic origins. Formed from eroded volcanic rocks, these beaches offer a unique and captivating coastal experience that sets them apart from the typical golden shores found elsewhere.
⸻
🌋 Why Is the Sand Black?
The black sand is the result of Tenerife’s volcanic activity, particularly from the Teide-Pico Viejo complex. Over time, lava flows cooled and fragmented into basalt rocks, which were then ground down by ocean waves into fine, dark sand.
⸻
🏖️ Must-Visit Black Sand Beaches
Here are some of the most renowned black sand beaches in Tenerife:
1. Playa Jardín – Puerto de la Cruz
Designed by the artist César Manrique, Playa Jardín is a blend of natural beauty and artistic landscaping. Surrounded by lush gardens, waterfalls, and volcanic rock formations, it offers a serene environment for relaxation.
2. Playa de la Arena – Puerto de Santiago
Known for its fine black sand and clear waters, Playa de la Arena is a favorite among both locals and tourists. The beach is well-equipped with amenities and offers stunning views, especially during sunset.
3. Playa de San Marcos – Icod de los Vinos
This sheltered bay is ideal for families and those seeking a quieter beach experience. The calm waters and nearby amenities make it a convenient spot for a day by the sea.
⸻
🌞 Tips for Visiting Black Sand Beaches
Footwear: Black sand can become quite hot under the sun. Wearing sandals or water shoes can protect your feet.
Sun Protection: The dark sand reflects less sunlight, which can lead to increased UV exposure. Applying sunscreen regularly is essential.
Photography: The contrast between the black sand, blue waters, and surrounding landscapes offers excellent photo opportunities.

Cruising in La Cruz
Puerto de La Cruz on the north west coast of Tenerife was the perfect location for a small family getaway. Sun was shining the whole time we were here, with some nice ocean breezes to cool us down near the beach. I had so much fun exploring the beach side and all it had to offer. Even the local supermarket and daily shopping trips always had something to offer. #2024wish #Summer23 #familytrip #canaryislands #campaignhashtag
North of Tenerife at Puerto de la Cruz
💺traveling from London Heathrow ✈️ and landing in Tenerife South–Reina Sofía Airport 🛬, A reasonably short flight at around 4.5 hours.
We had a private transfer 🚖 travelling up the east coast to Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island 🏝️
The trip only took about an hour and ten minutes ⏱️and was nice as you can see the beautiful views along the drive up the costal road 🌅,
you can choose a shorter travel from Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport around 30mins to Puerto de la Cruz, but the flights are less
🏝️There are many places to visit and explore with beaches and nature Walks, Botanical Gardens and The Teide National Park, Loro Parque Zoo to visit,
The water park “Lago Martiánez” well worth the visit as for as low as €5.50 (£4.88) per adult, child tickets are around €2.50, you can also get weekly tickets it’s from 10am to 6pm you can enjoy the large selection of Man made seawater pools and coves with bars food stalls though out it is great chance to relax without having to spend a fortune 💰.
There are many attractions in the area and it is well worth visiting by arranging a guided tour or for the more adventurous making your own plans hiring a car of getting a bus which I will mention further on.
🏨A huge selection of accommodation options are available for your stay, for all budgets and although the are many people that choose all inclusive options which are great although I would suggest reading reviews on the different hotels, resorts and accommodation options,
Many of them are wonderful but as everywhere you find you might not get what you expect.
🛌I can recommend self catering as one option,
Eating out is cheap and much variety to choose from.
🥘 If your on a tighter budget then every restaurant in Spainish law have to a menu of the day (Menu del Dia)
This consists of three course meal and sometimes even wine as well and average of €10(£8.88) - €15 euros
The menu del dia was introduced to offer an affordable meal to the workers who couldn’t make it back home for lunch. It has become a staple across Spain and is a fantastic way to eat and keep the price down.
Also a lot of bars offer tapas and although not often free is normally between €1-€2 euros.
🛍️If you like shopping again there is a wide range of shopping some places will try to over charge but if you are happy to wander and shop there are many shops offering lower prices and wide selection of products, food shopping is very reasonable and a trip to the market is well worth it
🚗If you’re happy driving then car hire is amazingly cheap and well worth it, But it does works out cheaper to get 3 - 5 or more day hire.🚌Buses are a fantastic way to travel and travel cards are the best way to budget as you often get discounts for paying in advance🚖Taxis can be expensive but if you ask for the price first you can get a deal.
