Candlewood Suites CHAMPAIGN-URBANA UNIV AREA by IHG

My colleague and I stayed there for one night for a business trip. The rooms were good, spacious and comfortable. I am personally sensitive to mold and anything that smells stuffy and usually this is an issue I face often with older hotel buildings, but this one was good. The room has a kitchen with a full size fridge, dishwasher, utensils, a sick etc which I think is good for people coming in groups or staying for a few days. The only problem is sleeping next to a noisy fridge regulating temperature at night. I personally turned the temp regulation setting off inside the fridge so it was better.

Nice and clean

No heat. Thermostat non functioning so room temperature got down to 64 degrees by morning. Called front desk and was told she was the only working and couldn’t leave the desk nor did she have a staff member to help. This was when the hotel was fully booked and only one staffer overnight! The dishwasher had a sign on it not to use due to parts ordered. Stove top didn’t work either.

I was here for a night, since that was all I could take. The room had a strange smell. Not the smell of a dying corpse smell, but it wasn't a fresh one. I kept the window open to suffice the oder. The bathtub had a 2" X 5" crack with open space in it. Water filled into the hole and reported it at check out. Also there was a large part of the wall whcih had been repaired and spackled, but not repainted. I've never stayed in a hotel room where a wall repair was made, but not repainted. To make it worse, I had a DND on my door at at 9:40 AM, housekeeping knocked and opened to the door. What do they teach & train housekeepers at this hotel, ignore the DND and just go right in? It wasn't even 10 AM! I have a hard time staying at IHG properties this year as their standards are getting worse than Best Western.

We arrived at 11 p.m. with two young children for a confirmed reservation and were told there were no rooms available. The hotel had already charged our card earlier that afternoon, despite the reservation being listed as pay at property. Staff explained that the card was charged early to confirm funds were available. However, the hotel already knew it could not provide the room. No advance warning was given, and we were allowed to arrive late at night before being turned away. The property did not secure alternative accommodations or provide meaningful assistance. We spent hours contacting more than 30 hotels, searching from Champaign to locations about 40 minutes outside Chicago, and found no availability. The most concerning part was being charged for accommodations the property could not provide. Overbooking can happen, but guests should be contacted promptly, the charge should not be processed, and relocation assistance should be provided. This experience left our family stranded and caused significant stress and additional expense.

One of the ladies at the front desk was quite unhelpful. During the check-in process, she simply handed me the keys without uttering a single word. I was unaware that there was no room cleaning if you didn’t stay for 7 days.

I booked a king suite, which was not clean when I arrived. Apparently they can't keep employees. I was downgraded to a normal room. No pool. No breakfast. You can skip this hotel.

When I stayed there, most of the employees and management had quit so they were very low on staff. My room was excellent very clean. One ladywho worked behind the desk that stands out The most is Terri. I watched her go above and beyond for customers helping staff on and off the clock. If she was called, she came immediately to Help without any question. All the customers seem to adore her. When staff went to Terri she never complained. I just hope the owners appreciate her as much as I did and I know many other customers did as well when I come stay again. I hope she is still there. I wouldn’t want to deal with anyone else.The coffee was great in the cubard area. Wonderful stay! Lived the free laundry. Loved the grill area. Came in handy.
